Konkani is an Indo-Aryan language belonging to the Indo-European family of languages spoken in the Konkan coast of India. It has approximately 3.6 million speakers.
Most of the linguists have classified Konkani Languages as part of southern group of Indo-Aryan languages, most closely related to Marathi within this group.
Konkani is the official language of the Indian state of Goa Konkani was declared official language in 1987 a minority language in Karnataka and Kerala.
Old Konkani literature and epigraphy has been found in the Nagari script, the precursor of the Devanagari script, and is called Nagar Barap in Konkani.
Konkani has the distinction of having the first printed grammar amongst Indian languages. Konkani also has a good tradition in literature and dance.
The Konkani language is spoken widely in the Western Coastal region of India known as Konkan. This consists of the Konakan division of Maharashtra, the state of Goa, and the Uttar Kannada (formerly North Canara), shimoga, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (formerly South Canara) districts of Karnataka, together with many districts in Kerala(Kasargod,Kochi,Alappuzha,Trivandrum,Kottayam etc.).
